The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle

The Zombies epic psychedelic masterpiece, tunes like "A rose for Emily" are delicate beautiful songs with intricate and intelligent melodies. Quite Beatle-esque at times but at the same time they have their own essential flavour. Amusingly the cover artist spelt "Odyssey" wrong hence the somewhat strange title but it makes the album seem more apt for the time period...

MV : "World of you" by The Aerovons

Excellent song off the Aerovons' album. One of the great lost bands of the psychedelic era.

Peter Wyngarde - when sex leers its inquisitive head

The end of the 1960s / start of the 1970s saw many bizarre albums. Record companies were probably so awash with cash they went ahead with anything, no matter how odd. One staple of course being a cross-over album by a TV, film or even a sports star.

Peter Wyngarde, the man behind the iconic Jason King, was given such a chance in 1970 to record an album but he didn't grunt or warble his way through some tired old cover versions. He instead presented a rather odd mixture of spoken word pieces, groovy music and of course the notorious "Rape", a song which discusses how rape differs in different countries in the world using some rather dodgy racial and national stereotypes. The album is utterly awful yet strangely compelling. Its an album you gain pleasure from owning though not from actually listening to that much.
